I want to hear your thoughts and views. How are you feeling about Short Treks? Are you an angry Brit who cannot get access and wants access now? Or are you still a hold out on the CBS Access front? Maybe you just watch the show with childlike awe and want to tell me what was fab about it? Also be sure to check out Glenn and Valerie’s excellent pod discussion on this episode.

Guys! Po is back! ST.com just out this out.
Ugh, I just watched "Obol for Charon," aka "We Can't Get To Spock Yet, So Write A Ship-Gets-Trapped Episode Bringing The Awesome Momentum Of The Season To A Grinding Halt." I will go look to see if you guys made a thread for this episode back in the day! If I don't come back, you know the mushroom monster ate me like it ate Tilly (who, of course, had to sing a David Bowie song, because now we need pop culture references in every episode *eyeroll*)
I am stealing “brooding muffin of pure sexiness”. Forever.
Oh oh I think Pike is way more laid back than Kirk and much more accessible to lower ranks personnel. I also think you haven’t even come close to seeing his best although he’s always good and they tend to play him in the background a bit. But I think you’ll see it. shatner’s Kirk was chummy with Spock, Bones and Scotty but he was pretty serious the most of the time to others.
If it weren't for WonderCon, I bet I'd be caught up to you guys by now! LOL
I'm now on s2E4. I've been loving the season thus far and the Lower Decks podcast - and not having to wait impatiently to get both! :D
Random notes in a random place for anyone who cares:
- As much as I love Anson Mount's Pike, I'm still waiting for the writers to show me the difference between him and James Kirk. I truly need there to be a difference, or I'll lose some respect for this series.
- The production values are flat-out cinematic. I cannot see a difference in quality between how current Trek TV looks and how Trek Features have looked. And this is awesome!
- As I said once before, I love Tilly, but... the writers really need to turn her volume down for my taste. I think she's best at level 7 or 8, and she's been turned up to 11 since "Runaway."
- Ash/Voq continues be a brooding muffin of pure sexiness. His apparent detour into Mirror Georgiou's Section 31 spinoff took me by surprise (I knew about her, not him) but I'm down with it and eager to see where it goes! I'm sorry, Spirit of Gene Roddenberry, I know you'd've loathed this Section 31 business, but if done well, it could rock this middle-aged Trekkie's world. lol
- Like the rest of you, I've also noticed tiny dashes of Star Wars sprinkled here and there this season. I like it. It shows Star Trek can do Star Wars better than current Star Wars can.
- I'm beginning to think the reason the Mycelial network is not mentioned/used in future continuity is because it's turning out to be a spooky connection to Hell and the afterlife and spooky ghosts and yucky monsters and Discovery has to kill it forever! Btw I loved loved LOVED Pike's casual comment about the Mycelial network: "If you're telling me that this ship can skip across the universe on a highway made of mushrooms, I kind of have to go on faith." hahahahahaha!!!
Unhappy Brit who hasn't seen them and for which there is no forecast for broadcast . And I must admit to getting annoyed and swearing at the pod and the forum whenever anyone mentions stuff from them.
Happy 2019, Lower Decks Community!! :)
Apologies for being waaaay late to the Short Treks/ DIS s2 party, but I just today re-upped with CBS AllAccess and am starting to watch all the content - and of course, getting to listen to Glenn's and Valerie's corresponding podcasts which have been waiting patiently in my iTunes. So sweet to hear their voices again!
So wow - "Runaway" - this is what a Short Trek is, huh? :) I like it. I'm with @Karen Chuplis in that I'd love to see many more of these produced and peppered throughout the calendar year; there's a real opportunity here to tell lots of different kinds of stories we wouldn't otherwise get from Trek's standard formats. I'm pretty much in the dark about what fans and ST producers have said of these things, so as far as I know, Short Treks may have been deemed colossal failures and scrapped from future CBS AllAccess plans? But having just watched this first one, I was really pleased. I hope most fans liked them, too.
I mean don't get me wrong, I did have problems with "Runaway." Like Valerie and Glenn mentioned, I also do not believe an alien like this could stowaway/stay on the Discovery without ship's sensors detecting it, and I can't buy Tilly keeping it secret. This is something for which crew members would get severely punished, and Tilly wouldn't so casually risk her Starfleet career over it.
Another problem I had was more about the tone and dialogue. There's a fine line between fan-servicing and writing some moments which show that these characters are much like us - and I think "Runaway" danced over that line. Maybe it's because the Tilly character herself is written with *such* a contemporary slant, and here was an entire story written all about her? I do love Tilly, really. I just have a hard time believing that humans 230 years from now will sound and behave like she does most of the time, like my crazy neighbor Lori does here in 2019 lol.
Otherwise, I very much enjoyed watching this! The Queen reveal didn't bug me like it bugged Glenn and Valerie, and the fast pace of this story didn't bug me either. (Maybe I prepared myself for that?) I just had fun seeing our spaceship again, and talking about dilithium crystals, and seeing holo-phones and food synthesizers and aliens. It's been a long road, getting from the DIS s1 finale to here... it's been a long time... someone write that down with music! Anyway, am so happy to be back with this series, and on these message boards. Hopefully I can binge s2 and all the LD podcasts in time to watch and discuss the finale with you!
I did want to mention something I haven’t heard anyone bring up and why I wonder if they won’t revisit this story was the very pointed reference that the design for this recrystalization is locked in Poe’s head. It would be very sad to lose Poe but I do wonder if Discovery re-visits this story she there is a coup or something and Poe is killed. It just seemed to strike me that this would come up in dialog at all.
I'm really enjoying them. I would actually like one a month all year long. It seems like a format that they can really explore the kind of things that wouldn't work totally within a series regular season. Bring 'em on. Little tasty treats throughout the year.
