So for those who have read my first recap of season 2 you will see I speculate about red matter and whether Disco is going to tie up or resolve some glaring continuity errors caused by JJ Abrams Kelvin timeline. I am convinced this will happen as Alex Kurtzman wrote the recent reboot films and now show runs Disco. There is also talk of a cbs Paramount merger which would overcome some licensing issues between the film and tv rights. What are people's thoughts on this? It could be done well, but were you hoping for something that stood alone more? Could Trek be in danger of heading into Marvel or Stat Wars territory of too much and too convuluted? This comes from some who is delighted Trek is back where it belongs in TV format...
The Kelvin timeline is dead along with the movies. CBS can't do anything with Kelvin timeline stuff, so closing their plotholes isn't a thing they would about or are legally allowed to do.
Yes, big news about the "shelving" of Star Trek 4! But even though CBS and Paramount might not actually care so much about the business element of this, Kurtzman is creatively invested in red matter and the parallel universe. He created them for Star Trek 09 and may very well want to sew this all up for his own sake.
@Glenn Since Kurtzman would be opening CBS to hundreds of millions dollars in a lawsuits, I can't see them letting him do this. Paramount had to keep its Star Trek 25% different from CBS Trek. CBS stealing Paramount franchise plotlines would be a dumb move on their part. CBS is in the hole with the whole app thing. A lawsuit about it at this point would be a disaster. If Disco is tying into the Kelvin timeline I hope they got permission first.
@Daniel Falch Ah, that's a good point -- and I'm pretty sure that after the Sherlock Holmes debacle with TNG, Trek will never make that mistake again.
I agree Glenn, i think this is Kurtzman's baby and am convinced that's where we're headed
