I am really enjoying this chapter four of the book, where we have our protagonist in his middle age, living alone in his apartment with no company.
What struck me most during this part was Weer’s have become kind of unknown in the town now, and from we have so far they were there along with the Blaine’s as to who arrived first and also became wealthy.
But although we don’t have any textual proof so far but John was not able to manage his fortune and lost everything as can be seen from Dennis working in a factory and living in an apartment. Although we get some mention from Stuart Blaine as regards tI this.
Because even Mr Gold does not recognise him or even remember his first name when they arrive in the bookstore to purchase Kate Boyne’s diary.
The other thing which I can’t get my mind around the the fact is why doesn’t Olivia marry Peacock because not only is he match for her as regards to their wavelength being the sam, but it feels like he genuinely loved her. But after marrying Smart it went all downhill for her regarding her addictions which we hear from Weer.
