I was going through the old forum posts while writing up my response to "The Road So Far" (which I hope to post soon), but I noticed that after a while I couldn't access them, i.e. that only ones so far are available. Just for instance, I didn't see the thread on "The Island of Dr. Death", nor the one on "How the Whip Came Back". Are those accessible? Are other people
able to load them? Glenn & Brandon, are they gone forever?
With reference to the posts covering "The Island of Dr. Death and Other Stories", I suspect 'behind you the Atlantic is destroying your work'. Actually the act of destruction was something I wanted to raise in connection with the Lemurian bowmen's attack on Dr. Death's laboratory. Bruno regards them as evil because they oppose progress (science) misguided though Dr. Death. might be - another Dr. Frankenstein, The Modern Prometheus.
Stephen, it's impossible to tell if anything is missing beyond on our own memories since Wix says that they don't see any sign of it. It also means they aren't going to be able to solve the problem. But I do have concerns about backing everything up, and I've asked Wix to consider developing an archive function. For now, keeping copies of your own material is the way to go.
...Having now obsessively gone back and cataloged everything, I am now fairly sure that there are *not* any posts missing; I simply misremembered writing on some older stories which I didn't write on, as Glenn suggested. My apologies for the false alarm.
Did we ever settle this? Because as I said above, I am pretty sure that I wrote some posts that are not showing up, at least for me — again, I'm not seeing my post on "The Island of Dr. Death and Other Stories" (I noticed because there was a new one on the story, but my old one seems gone). Not the biggest deal, but I'd hate to think all those were gone forever! (Starting with "Fifth Head of Cerberus", I'm keeping copies myself, just in case; but I don't have for the earlier ones...)
I don't think that's the answer, because there are other stories that I am certain I wrote about — "The Island of Dr. Death and Other Stories" comes to mind — that I am *not* seeing posts for. So some are missing — either from your system, or in my display of it, or *something*.
Stephen, support doesn't seem to think that anything has gone wrong (though I have epistemological questions they can't answer). But I found this statement from an earlier post of yours:
"Oh, and don't think I skipped or disliked episodes 6-9 just because I didn't blather about them. I just didn't have as much to say. "How the Whip Came Back" — one of my very favorite Wolfe stories and one I've long puzzled over — was one of the first episodes I heard, and it was the one that convinced me to go listen to them all in order, and to make sure I reread the story first no matter how well I thought I knew it. The other three were all good, interesting episodes — I think there's more to "Morning Gl0ry" that you might have gotten, and I am astonished and amazed at how much you did manage to get out of "Car Sinister". But no real Thoughts."
Is it possible that you didn't write any posts on these two stories, but we've all confabulated their existence because we are so used to getting your thoughts on each story?
Well, let us know when you learn anything. It'd be a shame if all those old posts just vanished. (With possibly one or two exceptions, I know I didn't keep a copy of any of mine....)
This is upsetting and disturbing. I cannot find them, either; but I also don't see some default setting that would delete inactive posts after a certain time. And there are older posts from both you and others that are still around. I've submitted a help ticket to Wix, but I don't expect to hear back until the middle of the week. If they really are just mysteriously gone, I'll inquire about archiving the forum so that in the future we'll always have a record even if this happens again.
