I agree with Brandon's take that Weer is a tyrant as a boss. A further piece of evidence of this is his reaction to overhearing employees talking about him in the restaurant in an earlier chapter. I'm going to posit that Weer was the person who left the employee locked in the freezer and it wasn't because he was afraid.
This novel has presented us with a main character who is dissociated with the consequences of his actions. He killed Bobby Black as a child and nobody knew what to do with him about that and it was covered up. I'm also sure there was alot of gossip and social stigma attached to it that he internally felt responsible for but no adult talked to him about. He kills this employee at the factory and it was covered up again as an 'accident'. I also think he killed the librarian during the treasure hunt, but that body was never found, so nothing else was said other than she "moved away".
For a novel named Peace this is a very creepy story.
