    Book recommendations

    in Gene Wolfe

Every year I buy a few books for myself as a holiday gift. I would like some recommendations for Gene Wolfe books. I have the new sun books and I am looking for more science fiction oriented books or stories.

Bit late for holiday shopping, but I recently read Wolfe's An Evil Guest, which is one of his later works. It was a strange story (which is what we all like about Wolfe) involving an actress, detectives, the FBI, a genius and/or psychic, and some extra-dimensional travel. I enjoyed it a lot.

I really like the Wizard Knight. I think the sorcerers house is the best of his later fiction, no question. As far as she stories go, there is “best of ‘ anthology that is a great read.

The Island of Doctor Death and Other Stories and Other Stories is his best collection. Besides one or two, most of the stories in there are sci fi. And most of them will make you cry.

If you haven't done The Fifth Head of Cerberus with us, that's my immediate recommendation -- it's also his most science-fiction-ish book, where so many of his other novels are more fantasy or weird. Otherwise, I suggest the Soldier Series, which is a great fantasy adventure set in ancient Greece or The Book of the Long Sun (you don't need to have read New Sun first), which has robot nuns.
